Well, this likely comes as no surprise to anyone.
After months of anticipation reaching a fever pitch, Disney released the latest movie in the Star Wars saga, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, to theaters, and apparently people were ready to jump back to a galaxy far, far away.
According to Box Office Mojo, Star Wars shattered box office records on its' opening weekend, earning an estimated $238 million in its first three days released in the US. This number easily passes the previous record of $208.8 million set by Jurassic World this past summer. Star Wars broken all sorts of other records, including the biggest Friday opening day ($120.5 million) and the biggest Thursday preview ($57 million), among a laundry list of other records that it has surpassed. Internationally, the movie is looking to open with a worldwide box office total of $517 million, which is impressive, but still a bit shy of the $524.9 million record set by Jurassic World earlier this year. But, it is also worth it to note that these are estimates and this could change, once actual values are reported sometime early this week.
All in all, it looks like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is easily on track to become one of the highest grossing movies in the world once its' theatrical run is completed.
