I'm being 100% serious. Not even I couldn't make this up. Automobile manufacturer, Ford, has posted an unlisted YouTube video featuring characters from Dragonball Z.
The ad is less than a minute long, but it is by far the strangest minute I've had in a long time. I'm trying to wrap my head around what type of research must have went into making this ad. I'm sure there are plenty of Dragonball fans who will be in need of a car some day, but I never imagined that someone would actually be able to create an advertisement like this.
This advertisement is an impressive statement on just how widespread geek culture has become, and the fact that it is an unlisted YouTube video, and not an ad on ESPN prime time, tells us that Ford knows what kind of viewer will watch something like this. I'm not sure if this is brilliant marketing or a blunt nostalgic stunt crafted to capture a target demographic.
Nevertheless, nostalgia extortion ads like this are a thing now. I can image it's only a matter of time before we see Sailor Moon transforming to save a Toyota Highlander or a Pikachu charging up a Chevy Volt.
